Many songwriters write their songs without understanding the theory behind the chords they have selected. They simply think that a particular chord sounds good with another. You may have heard a song that seems to have a particularly unusual chord change (groups like Radiohead or The Killers often do this). Generally popular songs follow a ‘key’ but it is sometimes possible to break out of ‘key’ if it fits with the context of a song.
