There are two main reasons for this. Firstly people are going to be able to identify immediately with a popular song and so you will be an instant hit. But here’s the main reason: people will also join in with the singing, and when you’re a beginner to playing songs on guitar then this is exactly what you want. It’s great for your confidence but it also means that if you are not the greatest singer in the world yet, it won’t matter. I call it the Karaoke factor because how many times do you see a decent singer die a death singing a karaoke song that no one knows, but then someone gets up and starts singing ‘I Will Survive’ and brings the house down!

When learning to sing and play guitar at the same time I’ve always found that learning the guitar chords first is the best way to start. I then break the song down into sections and stick with one section until I can play and sing it to a reasonable level, it doesn’t have to be perfect, then I move on to the next section. You will be amazed at how quickly you progress with singing and playing at the same time.
