Songwriting Using 3 Chords

Probably the most common song structure uses the 3 chord sequence I, IV, V (e.g. A, D, E in A major). Since most 12 bar blues songs are mainly just 3 chords then the vast number of songs from the likes of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and many of the modern day R & B songs are the same.

This can be varied by maybe adding a minor chord between I and V e.g. I, II, V (so A, Bm, E in A major). ‘When You’re Gone’ by Brian Adams & Mel C uses this sequence.

Another 3 chord technique reintroduces one of the chords in the sequence and effectively creates a 4 chord structure. This is commonly known as a ‘Turnaround’. A classic example of this would be ‘Wild Thing’ By The Troggs( I, IV, V, IV) or ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ by Van Morrison (I, IV, I, IV).
